Well, what is the point? Ok, here goes…the job of these ladder accessories is to keep your ladder from slipping sideways. Once your ladder starts a sideways slip the only place you’re going to go is the ground. If you’re working up at the eves, 5m up off the ground then you’ll get a serious injury. A lightweight ladder stand-off spreads the weight of the ladder across an area x 3 of what you’d get from just using a ladder, which is normally around just 30cm.
Secondly using a stand-off enables you to avoid resting on a gutter. Most houses these days have plastic gutters, which surprisingly are not designed to take the weight of a ladder and you resting against it! As a result anyone who tries this will find that they could sail through the gutter, shattering it completely and at the same time sliding sideways to the floor.
What to look out for in a Stand Off? Get a lightweight one, if it is lightweight then it is much easier to move the ladder around once extended. We sell a kit version that takes about 2 minutes to bolt on to your ladder. Easy to put on or take off enabling you to store your ladders easily once you’ve done your job.
Lastly the stand off puts the ladder about half a meter away from the wall, which means that you’ve got space to work. Instead your face would be on top of whatever it is your working on, making it awkward and potentially unsafe. Having more arm room gives you a chance to get your job done more easily and safely.
Is it really worth me getting one? There are tons of ladder accessories out there, the two we recommend the most are a stand-off and a ladder mat device to stop slipping. Get more information on LadderMats here. http://www.ladders-online.com/Accessories
